The imaginary woman

A workshop by Guia Besana

3-day intensive workshop led by photographer Guia Besana. The Imaginary Woman focuses on Fiction Photography. The participants will learn to master the most essential aspects of photographic staging: from story-making and pre-production techniques, to set direction and stage design. The aim of the workshop is to give all participants the opportunity to craft their own story through the creation of staged photographs. Under Besana’s supervision, they will work with a professional actress, and will have access to different locations, props, material and lighting sources.

The workshop focuses on the development of individual projects. All participants will share their work and interests, and each one will choose which story to tell, and how to tell it. Besana will guide the group through the different scenarios and characters, helping them curate their own mise-en-scène. They will learn to apply documentary and photo-reportage techniques to the creation of fictional realities through practical shooting exercises.

The programme also relies on a solid theoretical basis. The participants will learn about the history and uses of Fiction Photography, and will get acquainted with Besana’s work as well as the work of other renowned fiction photographers. By the end of the workshop, each author will have two fiction photographs, edited and reviewed.

Within The Imaginary Woman lies a desire to go deeper into the core of narrative, to penetrate the foggy realm of representation and find new paths across its tricky landscape. In the blurry border between truth and artifice, reality and tale, fiction becomes a compass. A gaze. A prism through which we can look at the world. Fiction is, after all, another kind of light.
